I am about to faint. I check every so often to see if there are documents I did not see in previous searches, or if new documents are available- there is so much available to us that is buried behind “popular” sites in searches.

Sammlung: Kunstbibliothek Berlin
URN: urn:nbn:de:gbv:601-3222
Titel: Meisterstückbuch der Schneiderzunft zu Schwabach gefertigt von Joh. Georg Schuster
Publikationsort: Berlin
Herausgeber: null
Ausgabebezeichnung: [Electronic ed.]
Größe der Vorlage: 2°
Persistente Url: http://www.digishelf.de/piresolver?id=77488794X

So you can see why I am sure this is where Kohler got his pattern bases from.

Not sure why he put the bodice in one piece but then the book has just finished downloading for me and I am too excited to not share before fully digesting 🙂

Marion and I are quite a bit of the way through of translating and publishing a volume 2 of our book :)

I should make it clear that we're working on this manuscript.

Marion just posted on my page to say. Very excited to hear that :) My page and journal are public, so would you like me to update, or keep this in the comments? I am very keen to support your second book, Drei Schnittbucher is literally next to me right now, so am on the "promote the heck out of it" bus when it is ready to roll out :)

I'm also helping rebuild the Lochac Tailor's guild where I'll be trying to create a reference library of *legal* copies of books, as well as book recommendations. So I'll be linking to the original munuals but also papers and articles and books that untangle them.

I've been able to motor through all the Spanish stuff by myself with almost no help (except to compare to the translations already sorted) but the handwritten stuff bends my brain.

Also, Kohler missed the fact that there is a back piece to the square necked bodice. It's the little rectangle on the bottom of the pattern that says "Das is das hinder theil. That particular dress is specified as belonging to a peasant woman. The skirt length I think is somewhat short. The sleeve is 1 ell long and the skirt is 1 1/4 ells long. It's probably closer to ankle length.

Oooh, interesting, I saw it suggested it was for a bride! But no, I was not suggesting he perfectly copied them, just they did come from somewhere. It was suggested in many costuming forums over the years he was basically making things up!
I have the condensed German edition of his book (digital, low quality) I keep hearing he had a much longer edition that had the sources he used but I haven't been able to locate confirmation. :/

The closed bodice, if I am remembering correctly is for a bride. But the low necked is for a bauerin.

In the late 1800's there was a surge of interest in the history of costume. They created a group that was based in Dresden. Up until WWII, there was a schnittbuch and even miniatures garments from the 16th century still in existence. From what I can tell, after looking, is that these treasures may have been lost in the bombing. I am pretty sure Kohler knew about this group and had access to items that do not exist anymore. It's one of my research hopes that I can narrow down a little more what happened to these things. They are not in the archives.
